Welcome from Arizona. I have a base 84 Sierra 2500 2wd myself. Love my longbed. Wish it was a half ton sometimes but for only $1300 5 years ago I can't complain. Working on a new engine for it now. Throwing this out there. I started a group 2 years ago called All Original Squarebodies on Facebook. That's a good truck to enter. We have a great group of moderators for questions etc.

Nice, original, survivor!!! I like it!!! It has good bones. I would remove the rest of the lower side moldings and glue (with a 3M wheel). Then Penetrol the truck. Then reinstall new lower moldings. Our vendors sell precut kits. :waytogo:

such a thread got me to thinking,

when I was starting to drive in the 80s I got a rust bucket VW rabbit with about 75hp,...it got 25mpg with an 11 gallon tank. (and I use to drive 20 miles to the nearest gas station you would want to buy gas at with a 5 gallon can with me)

I could bend the 85mph speedo over,...it just took a couple miles,

...and every kid in school if they wanted to go fast had to think how to get it up past 80mph. (rare for someone to have a 5.0 mustang or Iroc Z as we were all basically poor, with a few 70s 440 dodge wedge poking around with rust or mashed panels)
and none of the trucks had real big block balls, the 305 and the 302 and the 318s could move, but took a while). just a bunch of late 70s and 80s beaters and even if new,..basically a slug by what current kids drive.

oh, and everyone had a manual trans, as you could not have a 4 cylinder as you needed all the power it had, and none of it being drawn away by the transmission. a 1.6 vw with a 5 speed 75hp could take all the pride a 6 cylinder camaro 2.8 106hp automatic could muster.

I have a feeling, this big old truck will become the coolest dad rig for going to the lumber yard, when a 10 year old nissan sentra takes it on a 4 lane.....well until its CVT takes a shlt at 80,000 miles.

Just bought this for my 15 year old daughter. It started as a joke and then she started sending me old vehicle pictures. Now she's the proud owner of an 84 GMC. Great truck from West Texas that's straight with little rust. Needs interior completely redone.

Nice truck! Does she know that pre computerized vehicles need periodic maintenance? If so, great gift! Will give her many years of trouble-free service.

Seems like the wrong order of operations if you want the new moldings to actually stick. For anyone considering this old school paint treatment.
And for this truck, from the pic shown it looks like it might take to one last polish or 2 before the paint is gone. Worth trying before putting shine juice grease all over it.
