Ive got most of the hard parts figured out, found the unicorn pedals for a great price, etc. Hadnt planned on throwing the tranny in behind the 6.2 (was gonna go in with a 6.0lq4), but my son smoked his 700r4 and we arent ready for the LS yet.

What I really need are the wiring schematics for the back up lights and the neutral safety switch at the steering column. I will continue to use the auto column and remove the shifter, but I would like to remove/bypass the NSS all together. Any tips on how to do this? Also, what are the revers light wire colors at the column?

Are you sure you have a functional neutral safety switch. I though 87 the column physically stopped you from turning the key unless you were in park. They still had the same switch on the column but now it was used to control idle and backup lights.

Yellow and purple for the NSS
and
Green with Dk blue or black for reverse

NSS should be far heavier gauge wires

On my 81 column NSS and reverse circuits each has its own connector to the switch, IIRC the connectors on the harness are the same for manual transmission trucks. My truck was swapped from SM465 to an NV1500 then to 700R4 and now 4L60E. the original harness had never been cut. Also the NSS and reverse lights always worked like factory. I was a kid for the first 3 transmissions so wasn’t really paying attention to how dad made it work.

Here’s what the harness connectors look like from when I was building it this last time

i am not sure.

so can I pull the yellow and purple and tie those together to bypass the NSS?
are you saying that the reverse lights worked no matter what trans you were running? Arent they "engaged" when the shifter is put into revers?
