That darn TV cable and its finicky adjustments has me worried. I live in Tucson, and I don't know a single reputable tranny shop here. 4L60e can be adjusted with a laptop and a few minutes of time....But, saving cash and keeping it computer free was my goal. Still thinking.......

It won't really save much I'd imagine but you could always go stick and swap in an NV3500 or 4500

Not in Tucson, AZ. There is a light ever 1/2 mile. You can shift your brains out running around this place. Auto is all I can do.

From what I gather, line pressure is around 200 and the parts are all supposed to be new and improved. Not sure when it goes back again, but soon I'm sure.

His experience with 700r4 has me reconsidering this in my truck. If it's dying so fast on a 5.7, imagine what a 7.4 could do. But so far I'm still stock.

Sorry about the thread hijack
Line pressure is not a constant it changes with gear selection and tv adjustment. If the carburetor is not a factory carburetor your TV cable geometry will be wrong and kill your transmission.

I will be running a rebuilt Rochester 4bl on a Edelbrock RPM Airgap. So its close as factory as it can be I think.

I totally understand the TV cable making you nervous. We don't seem to have a good shop in my area either. I am going to have my 700r4 rebuilt just because its old and we do long road trips. ANYWAY I spoke with performabuilt transmissions and he said get the proper carburetor to TV cable bracket, and a new cable. With the trans pan remove make sure the "plunger" the cable controls in the transmission moves fully in at full throttle and no slack at idle. I am old school and hate computers controlling cars because I refuse to learn this technology, LOL. I would stick with a 700r4.

Now that is truly appreciated MB. I am leaning toward the 700r4 because I have a computer controlled car. All I need is a fussy hard to drive Squarebody that constantly needs work.

Ahh, fair enough. I've gotten rid of stick cars for that same reason before

Could a stand-alone digital shift unit be retrofitted to the 700r4? I've seen it done to 4L60e transmissions that are used in engine swaps where the factory pcm cant be used. There probably isn't much since in doing this since there are plenty of 4L60s and 4L80s in circulation to do this to.

700r4s are not electronically shifted. The use the TV cable and road speed to control shifting.

But can one be converted to electronic shift though? I know that a factory 700r4 has a long TV cable going all the way to the carb, but I was wondering if anyone tried to eliminate the TV cable entirely and retrofit some sort of electronic shifter to one.

This is what your geometry at the throttle plates needs. As for an electronic shifter on a 700r4 there are no electric shift solenoids,so no way shift it electrically .

If it's even possible to convert a 700, I'd bet it would be cheaper to just swap to 4l60e in that case

Why re-invent the wheel when both transmissions are already almost identical with exception to the electronics Vs. the TV cable.

Thanks for this, I'll pass it on. Or end up verifying this myself.
Prognosis on BIL 700r4, another grenaded torque converter. I guess B&M is having QC problems. That's the 3rd tranny to do this in less than 3000 miles.

There are tons of videos available to understand the cable adjustment for a 700 R4 with varying carb setups.
