3 new proform high torque mini starters in 2 months? Crappy design or something else. I do have long tube headers and its close to starter i have a heat shield wrapped around it. It seems to be strong at first then after time they slow down.
Mostly stock old motor.

My fathers suburban ate starters all the time. Never knew why. It eventually started destroying the flex plate. The timing was good. You bumped the key and it would fire right up but a factory replacement starter wouldn't last but a couple months.

Double check the clearence and check if need to use to use a shim between the block and the starter. Some big blocks also have additional bracket to support the starter.

I personally don't like mini starters. All of them I've dealt with have failed when still nearly new, and half of them have the motor housing rotated closer to the header than a stock starter.

I'd go with a '95-newer starter. They are smaller than the old style, but seem to have more power. But they do require shorter bolts.

my 454 was eating starters too. what I did was install a starter for a 1969 chevelle 396 4spd. they have a cast iron nose cone. I went from a starter every 6 months to this one that's been in for 4 years. highdesertranger
