I had never though of this combo before, but I bet it's a good one. Does anyone know off the top of their head what the combustion chamber volume is of a 305 Vortec head? Hopefully it's small so this 283 will be able to have some compression. I'd like to see it able to get up there about 9:1 compression. I know that's pushing it, but I know the Vortecs were good on compression too compared to the 80's smogger motors. Anything over 8:1 should be good though.

Kinda makes me think a small journal 327, 62-67 motor, would be a fantastic combo, cuz it might even get up to 9.5 or 10:1 then run a big ass cam to settle it down a bit on the compression and still run pump gas. That combo won't be good on gas though.

According to the info I have found the combustion chamber is 58cc and on the 283 the compression is sufficient and better than the smoggers.

Check out this link...some good info on the 5.0 vortec 12555089 casting, 5.7 vortec 10239906 casting, and E-Tec 200 heads. http://www.nastyz28.com/forum/showth...=56505&page=32. Edit: Look on post #478

What I understand is the 5.0 vortec 12552520 casting has the heart shaped combustion chamber like the 5.7 vortec.

This link has Chevy head casting numbers. http://www.gearheadgeek.com/ghgj/index.php/49-54-data/general-chevy-data/chevy-head-casting-s

Unfortunately I have not looked inside a lot of small block engines nor do I know a whole bunch about the various vortec castings, but some say there are bad vortec and good vortec based on flow numbers, some say all vortec are good and flow just fine just that some people stress too much over flow numbers. But I know a good machine shop tech can make any head perform better than its factory twin.

Yep, 58cc would be great for a 283.

062 vortecs are the ones you want, the 906 heads have a hardened inserts and it flows less. 906 are usually found on the 4 bolt 350 in 3/4 tons 8500 gvw and up.
All vortecs are the heart shaped chamber. all they really are is LT1 heads, with the proper coolant flow setup for a standard smallblock.
Watch out with the valves...bigger is not always better.

Although not as good as the 062s, the 906s are still good aren't they?

So you're saying the 350 Vortecs are the same as the 305's as far as Combustion chamber size?

From all my research, the difference in flow is negligible unless you're building an all out race motor.

Better than earlier heads....they may even make a little more torque than the 062's if the slight bottleneck of the seats icrease velocity at all.

Vortec 305 heads have smaller runners, smaller chambers, and smaller intake valves I believe. I think it's a 1.84 intake valve as opposed to a 1.94. And I believe 305 heads have 58cc chambers and 350 heads have 64cc chambers.

Yep, I'd go with the 305 Vortecs. That small difference in the runners won't even be noticed in a 283 since it doesn't really have enough cu in to take advantage of a bigger runner. Without looking it up, I'd be guessing it shou'd be about a 8.75 - 9:1 in a 283. Should be a good running combo.

Looks like I am on the right track by searching for 305 vortec heads.
