Dad had bought center caps that turned out to be incorrect. He needed 3.330” diameter and ordered 3.190” so .140 too small on the OD. We discovered this Sunday and I had to convince him that you should not have to manually center the cap while trying to put the wheel on, and to have runout over 1/8” is not acceptable (especially with me being a machinist).

The issue is he could not really return them because he already stuck American Racing stickers on them before trial fitting. So this is what I came up with, used some sch80 pvc (I think it was, leftover stuff at work) and turned the ID and OD to make concentric rings. I think this should work fine.

Side note- dad loves tire shine, I absolutely despise it. I like clean and dry tires, not slicked up grease bombs. Anyways…

I use tire "shine", but I specifically look for the stuff that soaks in and just makes the tires look like brand new. Deep black, not shiny.
Something like that I don’t think I’d mind too much, the stuff that just sits on the surface and is greasy/slick is a no.

Or use of the shiny stuff, but clean the tire first, then apply, not just layer upon layer.

Just like on newer stuff with underhood plastics, I like clean and with a new/factory appearing sheen, not all slicked up.

I hate that clear coat some car lots use. Turns yellow over time and flakes off all over.

I think they often just use clear lacquer in a spray can? That's why it turns yellow, flakes off and looks like poop.

This. Chemical Guys has a good one that I use, soaks in and just looks natural. I'll go back and wipe off the excess after about a half hour too, works perfect. I use it maybe twice a year when the tires start to brown, otherwise I just use a brush with soap and water.

OMG my Dad had a green one just like that! The bed started rusting out just below the rails 1st. Preserve that 1st I would say. It had over 350k mi when it finally blew a rod and parked it.

Check out the Toyota truck "Wolverine" conversion if you dare for kix.

So overall things have been going pretty good with the truck, weather permitting dad drives it at least one time a week. There is a list of stuff that needs to be addressed, which I had expected as I for the most part avoided touching anything outside of immediate stuff in the process of getting it going again. One of those was the carb, it ran decent enough as it was, however it quickly developed some fun traits like backfiring when shut off, popping while running, then the backfire quit, but began to diesel at shut down.

I pulled it this week and set to work rebuilding it.

This is the original Aisan progressive 2 barrel that makes a Quadrajet look like the simplest carb ever made.

Bowl floor was quite dirty. This would have been there prior to us as I never ran the truck from its tank until after we cleaned it out and was always ran through a filter.

This is the auxiliary accelerator pump diaphragm housing, which I discovered was torn and sucking fuel through the vacuum line (which explains largely the excess fuel condition and why the idle mix screw did nothing). However the power valve plunger was stuck, so it was like the three stooges syndrome, where it still got its extra fuel when needed and why it ran ok under load.

Multiple cracks/small breaks in the diaphragm.

Had three screws that wouldn't cooperate. Put a small blob or two of 309 stainless filler on the heads then tacked a junk screw driver to them.
