Hey so I have a 14 bolt and a dana 70. I am not sure with one I should use. They have the same ground clearance. what disc brake conversions are out there for the dana 70.
although I believe it is cheaper and easier to put a locker in a 14 bolt.

Thanks any tips are appreciated.

I am pro D70 since I use one in my K5 but there's no denying the fact that 14 bolts are cheaper to build. Realistically, if you're not wanting to use gears lower than a 5.38 a 14 bolt is the way to go.

Probably $650+ and requires resetting of the r&p. A 14 bolt Detroit is cheaper, a drop in (assuming you have an open carrier) and does not require resetting the gears.

14 Bolt all the way. Cheapest Detroit of any big axle, arguably stronger than the 70 & more plentiful (Also less variations). The only way I would consider the 70 is if I needed lower than the 5.38 gear ratio.

The gem of a D70 is the D70U in my opinion. Same carrier bearings as a D70 w/ a D60 size pinion bearing. It has a smooth, almost egg shaped bottom with awesome clearance and some have the 35 spline shafts. I had one in my Wrangler years ago and I loved that axle.

gee thanks....

My point is too many people get used to 4.10's and big tires and don't realize or understand they are actually under geared. Take a moment to see what it takes to make a truck with 42's proportionate to a factory 3/4 ton with 4.10's & 30" tires.

Been doing this stuff my whole life, bro. Seen both sides of that and in between. Dealt with overdrives, underdrives, doublers, and enough related math to drive you crazy. Don't just assume that I'm a ******* please. I asked a completely legitimate question out of genuine curiosity and not to be a smartass. Thank you for your consideration in regards to my reaction to your response. BTW, that was a friendly :flipthebird: and certainly not a nasty, harsh, unfriendly :flipthebird: . I surely never meant to offend you, my friend. I'm here to be a pal, not an enemy.

Back to the subject of the OP. What the hell are you building that might require a gear lower than 5.38:1??

Edit: I'm kinda fond of the little :flipthebird: guy too... I think it's funny as can be!

My fault, I was surfing in a hurry on my phone and obviously misinterpretted - no harm, no foul. I see you're in Ms, maybe we'll see one another wheeling one day.

As for the OP, I'll encourage him to use the D70 and get 7.17's. :grd:

In a rig that runs 2300rpm at 55mph in stock form, a 4.56 would put it at about 2263rpm@55mph running a 44" tire.... if my math is right. that's pretty damn close to stock right there.

I actually just passed through Mobile on the way to the Blazer Bath event in Lacoochee, FL. I may have pissed you off if you were on the highway. I apologize if I did. I'll actually be attending some wheeling events at Chocco Locco in a couple months but that's a pretty long ride from Mobile for some but I can't say **** about that because I drove 14hrs to go hang with my bro's at Blazer Bath.

If this looks like the rig with the driver that pissed you off either on 11/1 or 11/5, then it was me:
