I saw that. It'd be cool to see him do a 250, too, but that's probably not super likely.

I'm thinking the automatic is what made it feel so mushy down low compared to the manual, or maybe she was just worn out. Not that it really matters, lol. Both were actually F150s that were converted to tow trucks with aftermarket parts. Neither of them came from the factory that way.

Were they both manual transmissions? I've had two 80's Ford tow trucks. One with a 300 and one with a 302, both fuel injected. The 302 pulled much better than the 300, especially on the highway. Both were fuel injected, both were 4 speeds with a low gear (so 5 speeds total). Empty, they got...

I have no real experience to base this speculation on, but I would surmise that the low trim options and straight 6 engines have to do with overall cost. Cost on purchase, cost to maintain, and cost to insure. Most of the freight trucks around here run on natural gas or propane. Much cheaper...

One neat thing I ran into with the tail gate; I thought the tailgate was a takeoff from another truck due to the color, but the inside is the same faded blue as the rest of the truck. Not sure why the outside looks like that (maybe it was just baking in the sun more), but the wife is absolutely...

I don't have any good pictures, but I can show you a couple along with the rust carnage that I'm working with. The tailgate is going to keep it's patina. The doors and fenders will get replaced, along with the inner and outer rockers, floor pans, toe boards, and one cab corner. The firewall is...

Not for a truck application. This isn't a drag car. But when I'm building engines I have to consider the math as far as power:dollar. If you take all of that money you'd have to throw at a 250 or any small engine and put it towards anything with more displacement, you're going to make more...

While a turbo is kind of attractive, I don't think I could make myself spend that much money to get 270HP. I might be a little biased, though. Cars that should have V8s in them, but owners opted out of, irritate me, too.

Unfortunately, the truck is riddled with rust and will be receiving some donor pieces and a fair amount of patch panels. In the end, there won't be much that's original to the truck. The good news is that the box seems to be in much better shape than the rest of it, with just a few rust spots in...

Jake's Performance has a neat little shift controller that essentially makes it perform like a manual valve body. The car will be in whatever gear the shifter is in. It's not too crazy a price - $185 or so. The downside is that it's at full line pressure all the time so the shifts are going to...

If I were to go with an auto, I'd definitely go with a 4l80e. You can get pullouts at most salvage yards for $400-500. Panel trucks and utility vans came with them aplenty with varying engine configurations. Not that a 700R4 wouldn't work. I rather like them for what they are, but you do have to...

I agree the 250 and 3 speed have a certain amount of cool factor, but I really would like to cruise the thing somewhat efficiently. I would really like to keep the 3 speed. I wonder if I can hunt down one of those OD units for not too much scratch.

Hi Everyone, I'm new to the forum but I'm an avid gearhead. I wanted to touch base with you guys who have a lot more experience with these trucks than I have to see if there's something I'm overlooking. I recently picked up a 1980 C10 Stepside with the Inline 6 250 and a three on the tree. I'm...
