I'm thinking the automatic is what made it feel so mushy down low compared to the manual, or maybe she was just worn out. Not that it really matters, lol. Both were actually F150s that were converted to tow trucks with aftermarket parts. Neither of them came from the factory that way.- jorlain

Were they both manual transmissions? I've had two 80's Ford tow trucks. One with a 300 and one with a 302, both fuel injected. The 302 pulled much better than the 300, especially on the highway. I have no real experience to base this speculation on, but I would surmise that the low trim options and straight 6 engines have to do with overall cost. Cost on purchase, cost to maintain, and cost to insure. Most of the freight trucks around here run on natural gas or propane. Much cheaper...- jorlain

While a turbo is kind of attractive, I don't think I could make myself spend that much money to get 270HP. I might be a little biased, though. Cars that should have V8s in them, but owners opted out of, irritate me, too.- jorlain

If I were to go with an auto, I'd definitely go with a 4l80e. You can get pullouts at most salvage yards for $400-500. I agree the 250 and 3 speed have a certain amount of cool factor, but I really would like to cruise the thing somewhat efficiently. I would really like to keep the 3 speed. I wonder if I can hunt down one of those OD units for not too much scratch.- jorlain
