454 woes, off the road for the time being

Well, did a round trip yesterday north of home, about 6 hours of country driving, on the way back the old girl failed. Tried limping home, but it had developed a noise that slowly got worse, oil levels & pressure ok, but had to have her flatbed towed home. Worst part was the tow truck driver...

    TH400 Savage kickdown

Hi all, just returned from along weekend away, had an instance where l needed to overtake a truck at around 60 MPH. Put the boot into it and the auto kicked back to Low, big RPM. I know all about the kick down solenoid and how that works, but what else should l be checking, Governor, modulator?

    HEI spares

I'm thinking about carrying a spare ignition module/rotor/cap and coil, l think that's about the only thing under the hood l haven't touched and could fail with no prior warning. I had a look at the Rock auto site and the prices do vary. Not afraid to spend more for quality, but this is not...

    Dumbo mirrors

Ok, some are you are gonna hate me, but l'm considering fitting dumbo mirrors to my '76. The sports mirrors are too small, especially driving around Oz in a LHD vehicle. Is there a fitting instruction sheet with measurements for the hole locations available. In particular the lower hole, so the...

    Cargo/ Tie down points

Next on my "to do" list is to fit some tie down points or rope rails in the rear tub. Nothing imposing from the outside. I don't want to butcher a good tub. I was thinking of fitting a rope rail in the inner tub, made from a galvanized pipe with some flanges on the ends, and reinforcing the...

    Automatic transmission cooler question

My pickup runs a TH400 trans and I was wanting to fit a trans cooler to it. I can get a factory GM one suited for a 460LE auto, they're cheap and in abundance at any wreckers. Would one of these be big enough and sized right for the TH400.

Left hand fuel tank filler solution

Hi all, I posted this earlier as a reply to an old post l had started, when l probably should have started a new thread, I'm till finding my way round this forum, I'm better with a hammer and piece of sheet metal than I am with a keyboard and screen. Sorted this problem out ! Thank you to all...

    Front coil spring part number

I pulled the front coil springs out of my 76 C10 today to replace the suspension bushes and ball joints. One of the springs had the part number 328151 on it. Was curious to know if there were different springs for small block and big block pickups. Also if someone has a parts catalogue for...

    Fitting of twin gas tanks

Hi all, I'm wanting to fit twin tanks to my '76 Silverado short bed, I managed to get another tank and brackets to do the job, however l need to fit the recess in the L/H panel to mount the filler. I could weld in another section from a donor panel but they are not that easy to obtain here. Was...

1976 C10 front coil spring interchange

I have a 1976 C10 and would like to know if a set of front coil springs from a C20 will physically fit my C10. I understand they are perhaps a different spring rate and ride height. My truck was an original 350 V8 but now houses a 454 big block and I want to lift it an inch or so in the front...

    Correct power steering pump

I have a 1976 C10 pickup, with a 454 fitted with power steering and factory a/c. I believe it has the wrong power steering pump fitted to it, as the rear of the pump body hits the a/c compressor bracket, leaving very little belt adjustment. It is the square shouldered type pump body. I was...
