    Posi Traction

Thanks for your comments everyone. It’s a long bed and I’m always breaking the right real tire loose because there’s no weight in it. I thought the posi trac would help that issue and while I had it apart, for a couple of hundred $ more, I might as well change the gears.

    Posi Traction

I have a GREAT running '84 305 with a 700R4, all original 57k truck getting about 12mpg avg, in town mileage. I would like to get a little more performance from the small block so I'm considering changing to a limited slip rear end with 3.42 gears. If I have a 3.08 and P225/75 R15 tires, I...

    Dexron II or III?

Thanks everyone, I have 1-1/2 quarts of III so I'm in good shape.

    Dexron II or III?

I'm not sure what kind of fluid is in my 700R4 transmission. The shop manual recommends Dexron II. I have some Dexron III so would it hurt to top it off with it? Will the two types mix and what's the difference between them? As always..........thanks.

    Transmission Leak

Thanks again, I may just first try the yoke plug repair.

    Transmission Leak

Hi Jeff. Thanks for all of the good information and help. I have just a couple of questions if you have the time. Did you have to loosen and move the speedometer assembly back slightly to disengage the gear before pulling the case extension off? Could you tell if the output shaft seal (small...

    Transmission Leak

Thanks for all of this great information, Jeff. Did replacing just the O-ring next to the sleeve/bushing stop the leaking for you? When you pull the extension case away from the output shaft, does the shaft just pull out? I only have 56k miles on my rig and the bushing shouldn’t be worn out...

    Transmission Leak

Thanks again, I think I’ll give it a try.

    Transmission Leak

Eric, can you answer a few questions? About how much fluid do you think I need to drain from the system? I see the repair manual calls for a special tool to install the sleeve. How hard is it to remove it from the shaft? Will I have to remove anything else in the speedo assembly besides the...

    Transmission Leak

Thanks for all of your time to help me with this issue, Eric. I see that I'm going to have to give this a lot more thought and planning. I am just a shade tree mechanic who is approaching 80 and don't feel very comfortable with some projects. Getting to the ground and back up can be a challenge...

    Transmission Leak

I didn't want to go into the transmission to replace the sleeve and O-ring and was told to find a yoke without a hole in the end of it.

    Transmission Leak

After my '84 C10 sits for 3-4 days, oil from the convertor drains back into the pan, raising the level and leaking out through the splines in the slip yoke. I'm trying to find a good quality replacement, such as Spicer or Dana, before removing the drive shaft. Everything is original with a 700R4...

Correct timing and which vacuum port

Just got back from a 40 mile test drive after changing from ported to manifold vacuum (20" at idle) and the truck runs great. It starts fast, finally has a smooth idle, especially with A/C on, steady acceleration, no bog or pinging at WOT and zero black smoke and no knocking when ignition switch...

Correct timing and which vacuum port

Wow, this is great information and easy to understand. Thanks for taking the time to write it all down. I have switched over to manifold vac (20") and set the advance at ~11 degrees with dist line plugged. When I re-connected the line, I had to bring the idle screw down to ~730 rpm and can no...

Correct timing and which vacuum port

I feel really dumb but I guess we are never too old to learn.

Correct timing and which vacuum port

Is that the small galvanized looking part that the vac line attaches to? I was expecting something larger.

Correct timing and which vacuum port

Is the vacuum advance canister that black ball thing on the drivers side firewall? Thanks everyone.

Correct timing and which vacuum port

I just finished reading a 24 page report by Lars Grimsrud, a GM engineer, titled 'Timing & Vacuum Advance 101'. It's mostly over my head and it left me with a few questions that some of you gear heads may be able to answer. My setup is mostly original with about 56k miles. The emission system...

    QJ Adjustment

The dist. vac line connects to the base of the carb beneath the fuel inlet and next to the pcv port. Vacuum at that port is 0 at idle. At about 3000 rpm, it measures 10" hg.

    QJ Adjustment

Yep, more carburetor stuff. My stock 305, 700R4 VECI label specifies timing at 4 degrees btdc.If all of the emission system components have been removed, is this timing still correct? The last time I checked, the timeing was 9 btdc @ 700 rpm and the truck seems to run well. It idles a little...

    Rough Idle

I replaced my carb about two years ago with a Rochester Qjet from National Carburetors in Jacksonville Fla. All of their carbs are supposed to get a live engine test with adjustments set for a bolt on and go carburetor. I bolted it on and went around 3,800 miles ago and it has operated well...

    Oil DRIP

Thanks Eric, that must be where it's coming from. The tail shaft seal was replaced over two years ago and this drip developed in the last 3-4 weeks. There is enough oil there that when driving, it gets slung up on the bottom of the cab.

    Oil DRIP

Can anyone tell me why the front u-joint would be dripping oil? The transmission tail shaft seal is dry and not leaking.
