Starting to mike the crankshaft bore and journals to check for runout/oil clearance when I noticed this blemish on one of the rod journals. Have no Idea if the engine ran with this or if it happened at the machine shop or during transport/storage. It looks more like some kind of breakdown or erosion than a direct hit by something honestly. You can run your finger or nail over it and definitely tell there is a defect but it is completely smooth with no sharp edges. Makes me wonder if this thing ran like this with no problems. What is the consensus on this from some of yall? Run it or something to worry about?

Matthew

So, is there any “depth” to the darker areas? Looks similiar to past area of corrosion.

If it is as you describe it, it sucks but I would not let it bother me. It is located near the center of the bearing shell and wont effect anything. If there is any minute voids, they will simply hold oil.
I would be more concerned with under sizing those journals.

Yes, there is depth to the defects. You can tell the darker areas are lower than the polished part of the journal when you run your finger over it. There are just no sharp edges.

Its hard to quantify the actual depth of the defects. My guess is maybe 0.05 inch. No more than 0.01 inch. Think this is still acceptable? What depth would be in good faith to run?

Do you mean .001-.005"? .05" is a deep void and could easily effect the structural integrity of the crankshaft and probably make it scrap IMO. It would have to have been stored for a long period for that to happen. It a shame it wasn't oiled better before doing so.
Pics can be misleading. My initial impression was that all the reflective surface was at finished size with just some minute pock marks.
Take it to an engine builder and have them put their eyes on it. It will only take them a minute and they will answer your question without having to open their tool box.

Sorry for the typo yes I did mean it is probably somewhere around 0.005.
