My truck just failed smog, its a 350 crate that had a rebuilt quadrajet, which i replaced with edelbrock 1400, i tried to time it with light, and was way off, 2or so inches away from timing tab, i had a mechanic look at it, and said you cant time it with a gun, he used vaccum, and mentioned of another timing tab my motor needs that mounts highr on the front of block, that would make it time with light. Smog station needs to use light ?

Stock timing tab for that engine should be at the 2 o’clock position (a little hard to see around the PS pump). Older engines had it at the 12 o”clock position. Make sure you are checking it with the vacuum advance line disconnected and plugged at the carburetor so you really have base timing.

I'd say get the proper tab in the proper location and time it. What exactly did they fail the truck for? Do they actually do a timing check at the smog station? Or was it failed for exhaust gas reading? The reason I ask is because if they were under the hood I'm surprised they didn't flag the edelbrock as well.
