I was just doing some distributor research online and got thinking about my electronic spark control. When I put a new engine in I reused my old esc sensor, but the it looked rough, and the wire going to the loom is the same. I really need to do something about it. Would I be better off removing the esc sensor and installing a distributor that doesn't require that setup or should I get a new sensor and rewire it to the loom? What would be the pro's and con's? What's the deal with all those wires coming out from the distributor going to the loom? They're on the opposite side of the batt. hook up. I know it has something to do withe esc but i don't understand how it all works. If you all need some pics let me know and I'll get some tomarrow after work.

Go ahead and post some pics, I`ll take a shot at it. When you say esc sensor, do you mean knock sensor....like on the side of the block?
IMO, you would save yourself problems by keeping her stock...speaking from experience.

No dude, take that **** out.

You unplug that 4 prong plug that goes into the fire wall and jump between the green and black (might have to go out and check). That turns your crap 305 retarding hardware into a regular distributor.

Not if he has the HEI Corvette type distributor without vac advance, his timing will stay at base at all times.
If you do take it out, I would suggest you get a reman distributor for a 78 K10, that way, you will have the proper distributor for a truck.

Im confused now, I thought he was talking about the timing control system that retards the timing with a knock sensor.

Well, I have never seen an 82 with spark control, but, I have heard that it has a vacuum switch for "tip in" acceleration, that disables the retard. It does use a knock sensor. Anyone that i have heard with problems, have found that just replacing the distributor makes them run like new, as long as the other components are up to par. I am assuming the dizzy he has, is the same one that I am using on my burb with the TPI system, which is also what came with the truck with the Computer controlled Q-Jet(and early TPI systems on vettes from 85 to 87). It does not have a Vacuum adv. diaphragm, and it uses a 7 pin ignition module. This unit only has a 4 pin harness connector, and the usual HEI wires going to the coil.

If that is what he has, he will have to change the distributor to a vacuum adv , with the proper weights installed for a TRUCK. I think the car dizzy`s have lighter weights, which may cause detonation.

I apologize for my "Go Stock" thinking...I am in Cali after all! LoL!

Thats exactly what he will need if he does "86" the ESC setup.

The knock sensor on the side of the block is exactly what I'm talking about. It looks to be original so I'm not even sure if it is functioning properly, though I don't have any engine knock at cruise. If it's not all that important, then I"m all for doing away with it. Simplicity is what I'm all about with this truck. Less to tear up that way.

Here are some pics.

use it and bypass it as mentioned above, or buy you a new dist. if it works good I'd clean it, bypass the ESC and reuse it.

I just got finished playing with it a little. The mechanical advance dosen't seem like it's springing back into place real well and a vacuum gauge on the advance diaphram was only reading about 5.
