I pulled the Mark 4 engine out of my 89 crew cab. I picked up and 92 2500 last fall and pulled the engine for my 89. This one is a mark 5 with the oil cooler lines built in to the block. I cant find a good answer about just plugging them so im gonna run a cooler. I cant find factory lines so im wondering if I can just use rubber hose and clamps to connect the factory cooler to the fittings? Im worried about the heat from the headers. It would be pretty close to them. I can get fittings and convert the lines to 10 an if they would handle the heat but if i can get away without doing that it would save some money for now. What do you think? Any other options?

Rubber hose and clamps for the engine oil cooler? To each his own, but I wouldn't. They look like conventional flare fittings so you could use some Aeroquip-style reinforced hose with reuseable connectors. I realize they say push-locks can handle it, but I can't think of any time I've ever seen a manufacturer use them for that purpose. And we all know they don't spend a nickel that they don't have to. For me there's too much at stake to take a chance.

I posted about this very thing a while back, I'll see if I can find it. But basically, you remove the filter stud, remove the bypass plug under it, then reinstall the filter stud, then plug the cooler holes.

Also, you can get factory type cooler hoses for a '91 squarebody w/454.

If you take this little guy out, you can safely plug the cooler holes without restricting the oil pressure.

Sorry been busy getting the engine in down to a few last things before I can fire it up this being the major one.
@Blue Ox So I found some fittings like 50 bucks a fitting that sound about right? https://aeroquipperformance.com/i-16530247-fcm1343-direct-port-fitting.html Ill spend that if I have to but hate to have that much wrapped up in to it just for some cooler lines.

@bucket seems to be on to something here. I did some searching before I posted this and the only posts I seen were from you saying run a cooler lol but they were older so maybe this is new information you found? I found a few things that said to just pull that check valve also but a lot of back and forth on the whole subject. You 100% on just pull that and plug the holes? I kind of like the idea of running a cooler but I also am on a little bit of a budget. This engine has a lot of miles but ran ok if that makes a difference....I couldnt find factory lines for a 91 R3500 I looked unless you have a place? I would have just done that!

What about gmt400 lines? They still sell them 30 to 40 for each one. I know the engine side would work. The length would be the thing I dont know about. They list 4 different lines for 91/92 2500/3500.

You can find similar fittings in steel from Eaton or Earl's or similar. They don't have to cost as much as Aeroquip and they don't have to be aluminum. But you are looking at the right type of fitting. You don't need stainless braided hose either. There's plenty of stuff in the industrial world that's more than adequate and doesn't cost your first born.

Yep, my initial research was inconclusive so I figured it would be safest to run the cooler. But then one day I actually looked at it myself and studied the oil passage and determined that it was as simple as removing that plug.

Oil cooler hoses for a '91 V3500 will be a direct fit, but I found the listings for new replacements to be incorrect in some cases. I finally nailed it down to two different part numbers, but I don't know if I saved them anywhere.

Man the more I think about it the easier it seems like to just run it without a cooler and be done with it! Whats the recommended way to pull out the valve? And then just some thread sealer on the plugs?

I used a big lag bolt to yank out the valve. Then some pipe tape on the plugs and installed those.

It's not in anything yet, lol. It's supposed to go in my '77 K5 but I just haven't got to it yet.

Well got it out! Would have been easier before I put the engine in but oh well. The gauge was maxed out when I primed the oil so must be it worked! Took awhile to get oil to the top of the rockers. I bumped it with the starter and that seemed to help with the few that didnt have any oil. Need to get the timing set and header gaskets on and ready to fire!
