An OBD1 or OBD2 scanner will not work on this Truck GM was still using their own ALDL Protocol and thier own tech scanners. There are some companies that can sell you a cable or Bluetooth and you can use ALDL Droid. Old snapon red brick will work, old OTC genisys will work there are a few others but mostly used on ebay and you need to verify you are getting the cartridge for GM.

Bought this cheapo scanner too off evil bay, however it has been quite good for the money - colour screen too !

Does that tool give you any real-time data like IAC counts or at-the-moment sensor readings? All my attempts to find any WinALDL or ALDLDroid interfaces have failed (I'm not sure anyone is actually still making them anymore-links goto pages last updated decades ago or broken, emails get no response, no addresses for mail or phone). If that tool can really read the ALDL real time data I'll give the $$ to one of my co-workers who has ebay and get one coming this week....

Walmart sells them for 36.00 but the are 96 up they have better ones too, they do have a live data stream . Watch the video on walmart. Best bang for the buck imho is a elm327 adapter about 5 bucks and torque pro on an android phone, another 5 bucks and you get codes and live data. But again only OBD2

I have Torque on a cheap prepaid phone that I never activated the SIM on (only use it as a music player, off-grid GPS and OBD2 reader) along with a small OBD2 dongle a coworker grabbed for me off Amazon. Its fantastic and has saved me so much troubleshooting on my 2003 and 2011 vehicles and I've loaned the bluetooth dongle. It gives great real-time readings with graphs and logs - that is exactly the the kind of tool I wish I had for my TBI squarebody. With as many GM ALDL systems still in use in both cars and trucks, I'm surprised some company isn't making anything like that. Even at $50 or $60 it would be a worthwhile tool.

Finding the cable from a reputable retailer is the key. $70 - $80 probably.

Yea you'll need spend a couple hundred on a used tech, auto xray, snap on,or Genesis. There never was cheap for the old aldl GM. I can understand it though. OBD2 readers weren't cheap 20 years ago. But since obd2 will do every make and every model it was worth it for someone to make something, but GM ALDL,is GM only, out of production, and only 82-93 or there abouts.

The RedDevilRiver people are one of my examples of an oganization that no longer seems to exists...

I could probably get my hands on a cheap Windows 10 laptop easily enough (probably even one old enough to have a real serial port), but that cable has become absolute unobtanium.

Yep, I’ve reached out with no response.

I will - I won't be able to place the order until tomorrow though (need to get a prepaid card with enough juice to do the purchase). I'll also need to get a working win10 laptop - I have one but the battery is dead. I'll still be able to test it in the driveway tho...

Placed the order this morning - I think Moates owes Ricko1996 a commission or finders fee of some sort since he was the one who hunted this down for us!!
