I've had nothing but problems with my v-belt on the alternator since swapping motors to the 350. Squeaks until it warms up fir about 5 minutes. Even with belt dressing on it. I've tightened it several times. It's only two belts and tightened both even replaced the alternator belt and no change. Supper annoying.

So I thought I'd switch to serpintine belt kit for the 84. I've looked but nothing seems to have a complete kit with ac compressor pulley. I'd like to leave it on since maybe one day get the ac working.

Anyone do this to their truck? Or if I could get some ideas on how to fix the belt squeak. Either way I just want it to stop. Lol

The belt on alternator seems to shake a lot from the balancer to the alternator. Even threw one off when reved it up before. Tia for any help.

Is it one of the $8 belts?

No both the $8 and $35 belts acted the same. That's what sucks.

My mechanic complained about this when he put the 35 dollar belts on the 350 swap.

A floppy belt that can be thrown is an indicator of something not happy.

Are you using the same pulleys and brackets that were on the old engine?

I have done the full GM performance unit and its worth the upgrade to a point. It was on a basically all new build, but it was expensive! If you look on marketplace there are a ton of TBI takeout engines that usually include the front system for cheap. It's more of a PITA to get it home but for me has been worth the trouble to ditch the Vbelt and go with a serp system. You will need a new water pump as there is a rotational difference.

Yes, lots of small blocks in the '84-'88 time frame used the same type of ribbed belt setup. Trucks, and cars too.

Solution:

Go to Walmart and buy some sidewalk chalk (or regular chalk).
Start the engine, and carefully hold the chalk against all side of the belt. Coat the belt in chalk dust.
For safety: Make certain to be "downstream" of a pulley, so that the belt pushes your hand away rather than pulling it in to the pulley.

Belt dressing makes the issue worse, chalk makes the problem better.

Works every time.

Check to make sure the belt isn’t riding on the bottom of the pulley(s), should ride on the Vee portion.

Pulleys do wear, slowly, but they do.

I put a March Sport Track kit on my 84 with SBC Im happy with it. I did not buy the complete kit because I wanted to pick my own accessories. That said it went together well some drilling and belt lengths were at least an inch longer than recommended. Also be careful if you go this route because the the Sanden compressor SD7B10 I think is small and probably won’t work for anything but a standard cab.

Had the same problem on my '85, was annoying as all heck. Replaced alternator with a Delco Gold unit and got a Goodyear belt 15445 and it squeaked too, retightened it and squeak has stopped...for now.
