My 1980 GMC K3500 is in need of the turn signal assembly in the steering wheel replace, but the ignition cylinder can be pulled out so I'm thinking of changing it, is it very hard changing the cylinder? Right now you don't need a key to start the truck if you wanted. It is not a tilt steering wheel.

Assuming your lock is a US107L, then here are a bunch of options - starting at $12 with free next day delivery:

Search my thread on cylinder replace.
I think mine came from LMC or Classic Industries...or the likes.

Scroll down on the description of the product to see all compatible rigs.

But regardless- -

Buy 3 different ones and return 2.

Why buy three? Why not just buy the correct one and be done?

I don't know what year it changed over (I'd guess '84), but the earlier cylinders are retained with a spring tab, while the later ones are retained with a screw.

The one I took out has it press in tab as part of the cylinder, not held in by a screw.

Yeah, that's the earlier style.

The downside to them is that the one side of the retaining slot is kinda weak. If it breaks, then the cylinder can't be retained at the proper depth so that the ACC position can be reached. I'm guessing that's why GM later changed it to the screw style.

Why are you always pushing to buy and return things. It's a pain in everyone's azz and costs the seller,so they raise prices or quit selling.I Remember when most auto parts stores charged a 15% restock fee and no return on electrical items. I hope they go back to it.

The one to the upper left is the ignition switch I ordered off Amazon it clearly is different than the one I took out of the truck. I don't want to put this cylinder in there and then have it get locked in without being able to remove it.

Earlier than that. I believe 77 may be the changeover year. Note that if they have never been removed and are the push to release style then the release slot may still be flashed over.

As far as I'm aware it's never been removed it just started removing itself or coming unlocked out of the steering column, but this is the one that they say fits and the auto parts store sell the same style so maybe it will work just fine?
