In my opinion the main things the older ones have going for them is the 2-piece rear main seal, few to no sensors, and simple style timing cover. In the newer ones I like the roller lifters, Vortec heads (906s or 062s) and the way the 4 bolt main bearing caps are made.

Check those engine serial numbers before you buy! The only "High-Output" smallblock Chevy I ever heard of was the 305 H.O. found in mid/late 80s camaros and montes.

The long list of numbers near the bottom will tell you what year and how many cubic inches the engine is, and sometimes tell you what it came out of. Dont buy a 305 thinking it is a 350! I gave ya the info to tell what you're lookin at! LOL Good luck bubba.

I was told the best 350 blocks to build with was pre 87 and cant do very much with anything newer.

OK OK OK !!! Enough already. Lets get back at the ranch here. What are you wanting this motor for? And what are you putting it in? Is it a daily driver, you want it to do wheel stands at that drag strip, or are gonna finally pull that house off its foundation with it??? Will this be a computer controlled motor? Old school Trans or computer controlled trans? Carbed, TBI, SFI or TPI? Let us know what's up, and we can better advise, instead of making all of us including yourself look like a fool with pissing in the wind guesses. Know what I mean dawg??? Just trying to make sure you get good info here. :patriot:

I wanna put a the TBI setup on carb block and build it up for towing and hauling. Its going in the 90 2500 3/4 ton with sm465 trans. Maybe put some high flow heads and TBI intake on it with 700Cfm fuel injectors.

No doubt, that happens alot. I have gone to look at 2 differant 350's and because I was educated, I knew they were 305's. 1 guy I think knew it too, and the other guy was horrified that he got ripped off, cuz he bought it as a 350 and changed plans to a SBC 400 and was just wanting his money back out of the 350 he bought. Never buy a 305, unless its a good running 305 and you intended to use it as is. If it needs rebuilt, just offer to haul it off. They get given away all the time around here. Noone wants them.

That's right !!! Probably a 305, and it wasn't nothing more special than any other 305 as far as the block. Just a BS RPO code IMO, maybe a little bigger cam, or TPI, but still a wee o five nontheless. Its not worth $50 if its a 305.

I got the 96 vortec block with the TBI setup.

So why not just rebuild what you got? I thought you bought that 88 pick up for the motor to put in the 2500 to be a towing and hauling rig? Wasn't that a newer motor and petered out cuz of bad 700r4?
