Well my 82 needs overdrive. The 400 is a good trans but pulls too many rpms and with the 4.11 gears gets up to 65 pretty quick but thats about the fastest it can go. I need help deciding what to build or get. Below are a few options i thought of.

400 trans with overdrive from gear vendors... yikes$$$$

fully built 700R4

Alison trans yikes gonzo wires

Dont really want to do upgrade to a new trans like an allison because of all the electronics. That would be a nightmare but would be awesome. What do you guys think?

If you dont wheel it or tow too much weight with it, 700R4.

I am gonna tow stuff. Equipment, cars, etc. I was told if it was fully built it should withstand the cummins power.....

If I were you I would feel safer with the 4L80E, but the electronic **** to make it work right is expensive.

And from what I understand it has the same parasitic HP loss as the TH400. HRPC will chime in on this later I'm sure.

Have you looked into the gear vendor overdrives?

It'll turn your th400 into a 6speed with overdrive :)

You can find them used at a decent price from time to time

The gear vendor can split each gear , so you will have 1st , 1st o.d. , 2nd , 2nd o.d. , 3rd and 3rd o.d. , basicly . If you go with a new one you can pick the gearing you want (how much over ratio you want ). Last time I checked they were about 2,500.00 new. They say that they can take a lot of tq. as well.

IMO you have 2 choices, if you want to stay with the Automatic.
1. 4L80E
2. Re gear the Differentials to 3:55's

I would NOT use a 700R4 no matter how its built, IMO the cummins has WAY to much torque yet alone the shear weight of the truck, 700R4 is the same as the 4L60 which is only rated for upto 6000 pount vehichles.

Re gearing would be the cheapest route by far, But I would go for the 4L80E,
My truck is a gasser but I am now using the 4L80E with 4:56 gears and love it at 65 mph I turn about 2600 RPM with a 265 70 17" tire.

It is not hard to do a 4L80E either there is some wires and a computer involved but no big deal at all If you want more help with that part of it let me Know I am working on a tech article for it now so it may help you understand the controls of it a little better.

The gear vendors seem to be very high priced. Not sure if i want to do that at. Luke, i am interested to know more. I really want to stay with an auto since i plow with the truck too. I plowed with a stick before, all i know is my left leg and knee no longer work. As for the trans, a 700r4 is bogus it sounds. Good call. The regearing issues is what makes me nervous, i dont want to loose my push when i plow snow. The truck plows like a champ and can push anything. As for the 4l80e, where should i start!
