Shawn, I just bought a 1981 C20. It clanked and clunked, and drove me nuts. I thought the tailgate or bed was about to fall off, but it wasn't rattling when shaken; it was all solid. Pushed down on the bumper and rattles galore. So I removed the spare tire hanger because I don't have a tire for it yet. That helped some. After that I decided to push up on the bottom of the truck. That revealed the problem! Both upper shock mounts were loose as a goose and making all kinds of racket. I drove it without shocks for a few days until I got paid, that was fun yet way too bouncy and I don't recommend for the faint of heart. Slapped some new shocks on the back after replacing the top studs with the new ones provided, and torqued them down pretty good. No more rattles from the back unless it's a hard bump that makes the tailgate jump. Hope that helps.

Of course I didn't read the 3 click...boom...part...sounds like the rear shocks mounts aren't causing that sound. Hope you get it figured out. It sucks being without a truck.

That's why I have 6 trucks. 5 of them being Squares. Gotta keep a spare around ya know. Only 5 of them are Squarebodies though, and actually 1 of those don't count since 2 are to be consolidated into 1.

If the t-case isnt busted I would say the trans is b0rked. Cant remember if you said you tried reverse, but no forward gears and park dont hold.

Park should hold regardless, unless he broke the output shaft on the trans, or the rear sun gear which is very very rare on a Th350. But, if that's the case, Reverse won't work either. I'd say broke T Converter or input shaft, but that doesn't explain Park not holding.

For trans fluid to be pouring out of the t-case (including pouring out of the filler plug) my money is still on a mucked up trans, sunshell or something went kablooey.

All along I was thinking Th350, then realized, Th350, NP208. Light bulb went off. So it's a 700r4 according to his profile. Yep, I'd go with bad trans. And it's a broke trans, in need of more than just a rebuild. It'll be broke in the output shaft area and rear sun gear. All that fluid in the Tcase is coming out of the Auto trans thur the adapter into the Tcase, so he lost the rear seals too. May very well have also tore up the adapter and hopefully stopped there and didn't tear up the Tcase front end. I doubt it. Even the NP208 has a front bearing, not a bushing right? If it's bearing I'd say good chance Tcase is fine, but Trans for sure and likely the adapter will need some repair/replacement.

Pull that shiot apart Shawn !!! We wanna see the carnage !!!

This is actually an uncommon failure even on a 700r4.

The way it was going, he said it would make noise and he would do things to make it go away temporarily, it could have been worn bushings or thrust washers, or a combination of many worn parts letting go finally.

Im still not so sure that it isnt the Transfercase. Yes i know the Transmission can cause his symptoms but since he has to pull the transfercase out anyway I would damn sure check the output shaft of the Transmission BEFORE I pulled it, to see if it holds in park. It really sounds like a transfercase issue to me,

Shifting the tcase is now smother then ever.

If I need a new transmission...would a 700r4 from an 87 swap right in? Or not because of the computer **** added

Probably a good idea. It could still be a broke adapter. That would also allow the trans fluid to escape into the Tcase.
