Got it running last night!

put the new ecm in yeaterday evening and it would start with the wire plugged in but still wouldnt idle. i warrantied the distribuer again and got a set of plugs put those in and it ran.

got it inspected this morning and noticed that when it would idle for a little while like at a stop light, it would start to miss then die completely. i put it in neutral and it starts right up. what could be causeing this?

Ok, that rules out the torque converter locking up.
Have the intake gaskets ever been done?
Maybe a compression check is in order.
At this point, the problem sounds mechanical, and not EFI ralated. The irratic timing you are seeing, may be the system seeing the problem, and in turn, trying to compensate by altering timing and fuel delivery.
A brokent head gasket between cylinders will cause backfiring and detonation, and usually screws the idle.
Compression check is a good start.

it runs fine just but when it idles for a while in drive it will die. the original problem fo the timing going all screwy is gone.

The kit is around $40 and comes with new screen filters for the injectors, and a new regulator. Its a guessing game right now. How many miles are onthe engine?

205000. I'm going to drive it like this for a few weeks to see of it will just go away on its own. Might rind some injector cleaner through it.
