Another option is find someone about to do a motor swap. Often you can get a 454/TH400 combo or 350/TH400 combo for pretty cheap

Thank you all for the input! I've been looking around at engines and will start saving up when I get a new job, corona hit pretty hard. The truck, according to the factory options, has a th350 in it already and despite a little leak out of where the speedometer plugs in it felt pretty good. I was working on little things on the truck today and heard a pop that was followed by smoke coming out of the dash and from behind the radio. While hunting for that problem I discover the rats nest of electrical tape and lack of crimps that frightened me. Now the truck wont start, pretty sure I found the culprit but the aftermarket in line fuse was melted shut (goodie for me). I'm thinking of going the 350 route but might have to get a painless wiring kit for it so this might go on the back burner. I'll be hunting craigslist and facebook for a hot riders engine for pretty cheap while I save to fix about everything. Wish me luck as I prepare to forcefully learn a whole lot about this truck

This is the fuse that seemed to have melted itself.

Wanna go fast huh? If you want go fast and do it cheap buy a small sports car. Making a heavy vehicle designed to haul things into a sports car takes a lot of money.

You can put a pep in its step relatively cheaply by making sure it's tuned up and running good with no vacuum leaks etc. Also some taller gears in the rear and good tires can add cheap prefomance.

You jumped in wanting to know about engines but new engines and accessories for them start snowballing up quick. Don't forget to upgrade stopping power when you add the horsepower.

Good luck and keep us updated.:)

I wouldnt bother with the engine hardly at all.

Buy rearend gears instead.
Run a 4.10 or 4.56 and thank me later.
3.73 isnt enough.

You can buy a complete differential to swap from Craigslist for SUPER cheap and THAT is a great place to start.
