I have an '85 K-10 with a new Edelbrock AVS carb. I takes a lot of cranking to start it when cold but cranks and starts easily when warmed up. When cold and trying to crank it the "CHOKE" light on the dash comes on. Is the choke plate set too closed or too open do you think? And by cold starting I'm just talking about in the morning or after it has sat a while., not cold temperature wise necessarily.

Thank you

Are you depressing the pedal all the way to the floor to set the choke?

No I'm not actually. My main question I guess is setting the electric choke for cold start. Should I be holding it to the floor to crank it or just press it down to the floor and then release?

Just press it down and release and then turn the key. I do it a couple times when I start mine cold just to spritz some fuel with the accelerator pump.

Agree with Big Chip. At the shop we consider 1 - 3 pumps of gas normal. So you'll pump the gas take your foot off the gas crank it and it should start and idle on fast idle. After letting it warm for a few seconds you should be able to step on the gas a little and release it and the idle should come down some and then you should be able to drive away. That's how it should work, but state of tune, and engine condition may cause some variation.,

Thank you both for the help. I'll try that from now on.

I may be odd here but my truck only needs a quarter pump to fire up just fine on cold starts. Just a squirt lol

You are odd, or your truck?

:p

2 pumps as per the owners manual for mine, and I know I am odd.

:)
