tailgate anti rattle bumper help?

I need some direction on how these install. I haven't found a pic on the net to show whether they go in or out, but it really doesn't matter much as they sit flush with the outside sheet metal of the box side which holds the tailgate out too far. I could use some pics or advice, thanks.

Mine are installed like picture 2, and the tailgate shuts without any issues.

2nd pic is right. But it doesn’t matter if it works both ways?

Mine sit farther out then 75gmc's keeping the gate from sitting flush with the bedsides. I think I'll take the belt sander to them and take a little off until it fits better.
