I have the new bottom piece that goes into the steering box. Well it's not new, it came off my step dads 84. How hard is it to get the old one off? Was told I might need a gear puller to get it out. Going to try to swap them out tomorrow. Any tips would be appreciated.

spray some WD40 on it. They can be a bugger. but if you get rid of the steering shaft, if you have to you can use a big screwdriver and hammer the splined clamp open, from the same direction that the steering shaft is in now. just be carefull not to wreck the splines on the steering gear and don't get to crazy with the hammer. don't wanna wreck your steering gear/box

it will probably just pop right off if you use the screwdriver and pry between the box and the clamp

Oh believe me, it's on my list. I'm going to swap the body lift for a suspension lift sometime in the near future and am planning on doing it then. Just waiting until I can do lift/tires and all that at the same time. Already had this piece and it's more of a safety issue for me atm.

So I got the bottom piece off the steering box, but the replacement I got off a 3/4 ton won't fit. The spline clamp is bigger. The old one fell apart when I took it off, so I'm stuck until I order a new one. I guess I should just order the whole shaft while I'm at it.

I would look into doing this rather than dropping 235 bucks on that shaft. You will just have to get this shaft from your local junkyard, same concept. Or just go to a local parts stood and look into a replacement rag-joint. They sell them in the help section for fairly cheap if I remember right. That's just my opinion.

I saw that thread earlier and I think that's what I'm going to do if I can't find a new rag joint in the morning.

those rag joints in the help section are junk. one size fits all, dubious quality. highdesertranger

So Autozone/Oreillys/Napa cant get the new coupler, they just sell universal kits. According to LMC, the one I pulled off the 86 3/4 ton should work. They only have 2 different part numbers, one from like 73-76 and one for 77-87. Not sure how much they differ, but the one I got off the 86 is too big. I even swapped bolts out of my old one because it had more threads but I still cant get it to tighten down enough.

According to Rock Auto, they changed the spline size around 76-77. pre 77 are 13/16" and post 77 are 3/4. I guess the 86 we got this part off is running a pre 77 steering box?

Unless someone used a 90's model trucks steering box for the better turn ratio. I can't remember what that boxes name is but a lot of people do that mod

https://www.rockauto.com/catalog/moreinfo.php?pk=3025791&cc=1300105 This is what I ended up ordering. That should work unless its my box that's been changed out instead of the 86 like Im thinking. The 86 was wrecked in the front end once upon a time, but I guess we will see. It was only $16+s&h so it wont be the end of the world if it doesn't fit.

Got the new one in on my lunch break. Eliminated almost all of the play in my steering.
