replace sm465 with 4l80E

how hard would this swap be on a 87 gmc. truck has a 208 transfer case. donor is a 90's suburban in our field. looking to put the 454/4l80E in my truck which currently has a 305/sm465 thanks

Does this 90 Burb have a Tcase married to it? And are you sure the 90 has a 4L80-E. It's been said 91 was first year of the 4L80-E. Doesn't mean 90 couldn't have been a transisition year and some late model 90's have it, or that it has been converted in the past. If it's a 4L80-E w NP205 and wiring harness is there with the ECM to controll it with the TBI, I'd be jumping on it if I were you.

If its trully a 4L80E in the Burb then exxectially it will be a direct swap. ECM,Wiring harness, Transmission cooler lines, you would have to use the transfercase from the burb aswell as the instrument cluster for the VSS. The only thing you would have to come up with is a Driveshaft. Which the driveshaft is easy as hell, so long as you are using the burbs rear differential. Driveshaft measurement from center of u-joint to center of the opposite u-joint is 58.5". Easiest way to get that is to find one from a 90's regularcab longbed that has the 4l80e in it.


BUT I will warn you the early model 4l80e has its problems.

Burbs, Blazers and Crew Cabs are Squares up to 91. In 92 they went to new GMT400 body style.

I see now. I was thinking he was saying 90 model and figured he was talking 91. But yep, could be any 90's model and even have a pushbutton Tcase if it's 4x4.

If you can't find a year sticker on it anywhere, just get the 10th digit of the VIN if an 81 or newer, then we'll know.
