9/16" you mean the head of the bolt? If so diameter of the head is not in reference to the diameter of the bolt, a 9-16" head size is usually a 3/8" diameter bolt, a 9/16" diameter bolt usually has head size of 13/16", there's a diagram in chitons repair manuals ie:

I think the thread size was the same for all years, but there were different bolts used. I think the later style had a smaller shoulder because the shifter had a bushing in it. There may have been one or two other variances also.

Thx for the replys my buddy bought one on Craigslist and didnt fit so he came up with something else
