Ya I thought that was the issue with nv4500. You can find those 4500s in most 90s 1 ton chevs. which will give you the correct bell housing. Quite a few 4x4s too

What transfer case did you have?

At that point I didn't know what I had or how to distinguish.. All I know is I couldn't get that damn truck stuck for the life of me.

Ya they were petty solid.

I think if I was ever to go to the trouble of installing a manual it would have to be an nv4500/205, although im quite impressed with the design of my 241 that I just rebuilt/serviced.

it's hard to beat a 465 mated to a 205 for low end. it's the high end that I wish I had, an overdrive or better yet a gear splitter. highdesertranger

I think I'll keep my eye on the local paper and craigslist to try and find one of these. If I'm going to go thru all the work to do a swap, I'd love to have a granny low and an OD. That would make the truck perfect.

All of the NV4500's have a granny low and an overdrive. Just the early ones, granny low was a bit lower. The reason the gear ratios changed is that there was a big gap between 2nd and 3rd that wheelers didn't like at all. So the later model has closer gear ratios, this makes the granny gear a bit taller but it's still a good granny gear.

Yep, Notice how 95 and later, the 2 to 3rd ratios are closer together. Granny is still granny, just not quite as deep.

Not all, but many broke NV4500's are due to using the wrong oil in them. People get mislead by a Castrol brand of fluid that is OK to use, but in fact it is NOT ok to use and will cause the trans to go to ****.

IIRC, it's Castrol Syntec that guys use and think is OK to use and what they get cuz it's much cheaper, but it's another name that is actually supposed to be used. To make sure you get the right stuff, it's probably best just to go to the GM or Dodge dealer and get it. Quite pricey though. Seems somone told me $30 a quart. Castrol SynTorq may be the one you're supposed to use. At any rate, they're close in names and guys use the wrong stuff.
