It's also worth noting that a Gen VII BBC cam will also work just fine, but would change the firing order to an LS firing order. It would also use the factory roller setup with a cam retaining plate. Also, I'm pretty sure any BBC timing gear will work with or without the factory stepped nose setup. The stepped nose is to allow the retaining plate to be BEHIND where the timing gear would mount and has no effect. The factory EFI timing gear setups are different to account for the crank wheel needing to have the 4x reluctor on it. This limits it to only having room for a single row timing chain. If you are not running the EFI and therefore don't need the reluctor, you can run a standard BBC double roller timing setup on either roller or flat tappet cam setup.

wow, lotsa information to digest. the engine is 70 miles away so I can't get details very easy. The 72-year-old owner is a true gearhead, but it's been 10 years or more since he played with the 502 and its innards got scattered around a large shop full of mostly LS stuff and modified C6 Corvettes. He is trying to clean out the shop a bit so more parts may turn up, I would like to find the old roller cam stuff and see if it's any good. I also saw one iron BBC head that came from the engine I think.

The 454 in my current truck has a lot of new parts I installed when I replaced the cracked heads, like a new hydraulic cam kit that has 200 miles on it, already run in and working well. I think the clutch was recently installed, also I have an old Torker intake, holley 750 DP and so on. The truck worked well until it the bearing failure so I'm trying to re-use existing parts as much as possible.

As soon as my deposit check clears, I will grab some cash and go get the short block and anything else that looks related. We have found the oil pan, dampener, maybe starter and timing cover and other bits. Might have the engine by Sunday.

The iron heads that would have come off it are very good heads, but they will be rectangular port heads and not great at low RPM. I would still run them if you can get them. The big block cam will be very recognizable compared to an LS one. Look for the stepped nose, stock timing setup would likely also have the cam plate near it, it is a round plate with a large hole in the center that the cam nose sets in. It will have two "ears" on the sides with holes that you would put bolts in to hold it to the block. It also would have had the spider and dog bones that look like this:

It is a good setup that is very reliable, but is limited on how much lift you can run. If you are trying to run a cam with more than ~.650 lift, you can't use the factory dog bod and spider setup.

You can also just buy all the retaining hardware new for ~$125 https://www.summitracing.com/parts/...4aH8h_1Toq9vPKFERWnmMN7CA5WOnh7hoCez0QAvD_BwE
