Yes those bed sides are expensive. But your rite I’ve been looking at some beds here and there . Seen a couple with single gas doors , one side or the other . I guess the long beds are getting scrapped or something. Aftermarket sides are 499 each. Don’t know my route yet . But thinking of just that pieces, here and there

I’d look for a bed with good condition floor and good tailgate and front section and see if you can’t find one with rusty or rotted side(preferably just one side!) and but a new bedside.
I have 2 decent condition bedsides but they are flush 78 older ones

I have one OK bedside with a door but I’m way up in Wisconsin

some guys have the door assembly welded in and some here have done it themselves. if you know a welder or find one with decent prices and body work, you could try that. it would allow use of custom fuel cell or tank if desired and then the location could be where you want, but if you wanted original, this is assuredly more costly than a bedside but if you are equipped yuou could save money

I bought a decent one for $50 about a year ago... sold the sides to the guy who bought my 74 a few months earlier to break even and then am using the floor to replace the rotted out one on my truck currently. I'm actually welding up the side doors on mine and putting in a rear mount blazer tank with the filler hidden behind the tail light.

Seems like Long beds are hard to find nowadays, short beds are available pretty cheap , I just want to keep it original on that dual tank deal , plus I like long beds for that extra hauling space .

What all is the damage to your bed like?
Also, I think all the long beds are sold because they are the most made and no offense to the people with them but short beds are... babied... more often.
I say that as someome who drives to Walmart snd it’s fillled with lifted pavement princesses and usually they have no scuffs no nothing.
I go and leave and spend about 5 minutes throwing the tailgate at the latch with keys in one hand so probably leaving marks, each throw makes an ungodly thud because the trunnions are a little worm and there is only the stop bumpers. None of that padded luxurious quiet ladder minibar ribbed for his pleasure tailgate shit In a new truck.

oh, I have long beds. I don’t really have time to waste in my life or backseat drivers to satisfy

a lot of southern beds are purchased cheap and brought up here snd sold for 2k+. A square bed in ok shape is 1500. Period. Bad, missing parts, rusty, but still useable is 1000. 500 is parts of bed

but no offense to those with shortcom-I mean short beds

That has not been my experience here on the left coast. Short beds are basically unobtanium and going for big bucks, long beds are everywhere out here. You can't throw a rock without hitting three long bed trucks rotting in a field around here.

Yes although I will make this truck a decent looking truck , body wise ! It will be used as a truck , hauling some wood occasionally, mulch and such . My time is limited , I am still playing with the idea of repairing it, and possibly cutting the bad sections out and replacing them from a donor bed . If it’s just to far gone . But this is my damaged areas . Sad thing about it it’s not rusted out ... so I just hate a tree fell across it !

What my neighbor says from New York, some guy buys rust free beds and takes them up north for big bucks .. I’ve done some rough stuff with trucks in my younger days . Tear them all to crap ... now I just use them like hell . I don’t like a truck I can’t get dirty though !!;)
