the early ones had problems but now the rebuilt ones are much better with a lower first gear and over drive .

If you have a couple wires going into the trans a couple inches behind the dipstick it's a TH350-C (lockup). Even if you dont have wires look for the plug-in, some people eliminate it.

A th 350 is three speed automatic.period. If it has overdrive it is not a th 350.

If the pan is square and has a cable runnin into the top of the case next to the valve body then its a 700r4. If the pan is not square it is a TH350 or TH400. Correct about the connector just behind the dipstick. Mine is a lockup TH350 but lockup has been eliminated.

Only difference between a lockup and a non lockup is once the converter reaches a certain RPM in the final gear it will lock completely causing engine RPM's to drop.

Only reason you would need to know if it is or not is for converter selection and rebuild kits.

The reason they got a bad rep, is cuz the lock up converter is not as strong, and the pump is a bit different and can have issues. Th350 wo the C is better if you can give up the .5 of gas mileage on the freeway.
