Got drivers side in, used a washer and nut inside to hold it in place. Was able to get bach there because a previous owner drilled a 1 1/2” hold just below dash on drivers sidewall to run power windows wires into cab from drivers door. We since went back manual so the hole came in handy. Tried to go through the passengers door rubber boot opening, but it’s too far from switch hole to let me get in to put a washer and nut there. I may just cut another hole in sidewall and when finished add a metal or rubber plug, depending on what Easton says.

Thanks for all the ideas and help y’all

Randy and E

Understand this post is months old but I have a question. It’s been years since I messed with the dome light. Does the dimmer switch (twisted all the way over to the right) cut off the dome light if the doors are open?

It does not. There is no option to turn the domes off.

Thank you
GM didn't go to that on the trucks till the '95 interior update and redesign on the OBS/GMT 400 trucks. It is a handy thing to have, when you are loading or unloading, or other reasons why you have the door/s open. Another OBS thing that I coulda used on our square body Burbs is the rear lock/unlock switch.

And once they did it they named it "Dome light override" like it is something unusual to be able to turn the interior lights off

I guess for civilian vehicles in 1995, it was a "new" thing? I know police vehicles had that capability long before that, here in the US.

Since you stated the dome gets brighter with both doors open, there is most likely a bad connection from the door switches to the metal door post. Rust will act as an insulator. If the switch mounting threads are rusty they add resistance to the circuit. You can test this by connecting a good ground to the wire that is going to the switch.

A small wire brush will help clean the threads for the switch.
On my truck I installed a new dome light bulb thinking it was bad because it wouldn't come on with either door open. Took out the door switches and gave them a good cleaning with emery cloth concentrating on the contact points of the switch shaft, viola! Both worked like new.
