Where the arrow points too is what looks like to be a slot with the flashing still closing it, and it seems to line up with a tab that's on the old ignition cylinder, this slot would have had to have been opened up to depress this button to release the cylinder, the newer cylinder doesn't have that tab in that location, I may have to find an ignition cylinder that matches my old one in order for it to lock into the column?

I'm not sure but it might be the 1978 design, look at the lock cylinder on the top it has a notch cut out of it I'm assuming that's where retaining screw goes to hold it in place, but if you look at the box cylinder below it there is a protruding tab type thing that I've circled I believe that should have to be pressed in to release a cylinder, but it remains inward all the time I can't get it to come out. Maybe with the diagram previously sent I can disassemble it and see if I can fix it? Otherwise I need to find one exactly like it.

I found this one on Amazon and it refers to fitting the models without the retaining screw, it seems to appear identical so maybe I need to try this one?

My 78 had the one with the spring-loaded keeper, you may have to Dremel the slot in yourself, was probably missed during assembly as it's only used to remove the tumbler assembly.

The last cylinder I purchased from Amazon has the spring loaded retainer, it snapped and locked right into place!
Thanks for everybody's help! This one my dad's truck he bought in 1980 from the factory and I am trying to repair a few neglects so that it can be comfortably driven. These neglects are just more annoyances from age, not from abuse! I remember when my dad got this truck, it was his baby!

So to be clear OP, this 1980 manual guidance is not helpful?

That would mean the column is different, no biggie, but remember parts for it are a 1978 (column) that means you may also have a glass fuse box? Or do you have plastic ATC fuses?

I know the truck has a glass fuse box because I have the redneck brother-in-law that used the 22 shell cartridges a fuse, but I just remembered it did have an automatic transmission and my brother must have changed the steering column, and if that's the case the steering column is out of the 78 1 ton truck that he got the 454 out of.

76 and 77 have different cylinders. and 77-78 didn't have a retaining screw either? But the 77-78 won't work in the 75-76's. I literally just went through the column in my 79 but I'm 99% sure it had a screw.

My 84 has a screw.

I always thought there were just two versions... a retaining tab, or a retaining screw. What years got what, I've never tried to nail down.

I remember what happened now. It was over a year ago lol. Guy had the wrong one in there when I got it

It seems 73-77/78 would be no retaining screw. Then 78/79 could maybe be either or? That's what I'm seeing/ remembering.

I remember the replacement I got didn't feel good in the 76 so I snagged one from a 77 and it did work and felt better. That was my confusion, plus the screw goes from a Phillips to a torx. The 79 may have been replaced before though, so.
