Fuel Goes to Empty when shifter moved from Park

I have an early ‘73 C-10 Suburban that the fuel gauge reads correctly when the truck is in Park but buries the needle when moved to Drive. Any ideas?

Column shifter linkage under the drivers seat area is probably grounding out the sending unit wire as it moves into drive. Check for bare wire areas that touched the linkage.
