I’m wrapping up an install of an nv4500 into my K30 which also has an np208.
I have concerns over the horror stories of failed seals and fluid mixing. I’m trying to find a fluid that works in both. When searching the interwebs, most of the ‘experts’ go on about if you can’t afford the right fluid blah blah carbon fiber synchros blah blah blah.
My tranny has new internals, no fiber synchros. In fact, if you have an nv4500 that was built in the last 5 years, it likely has all metal synchros.
The company that built the trans recommends Valvoline Synchromesh MTF. They also will accept Dodge’s new recommendation for the nv4500 which is Mopar ATF+4(neither mopar nor gm carry the original fluid any longer which was Castrol Syntorque).
I mentioned to them that I like the idea of the mopar atf+4 in both the trans and tcase for mixing purposes. He said, “Yep, that’ll work...but you could also use the valvoline synchromesh in both. The transfer case will probably like it better!”
At this point I think these guys really like Valvoline Synchromesh so I asked, “Do you guys rebuild old transfer cases?” Hey replied, “Yep!”
Then I said, “So you’d have no problem warrantying an np208 you built with Synchromesh?” To which he replied, “No problem!”
So what say you? What would you guys do?
