Fender removal

:shrug: I need help. I have a 1984 gmc Sierra, I am redoing the body and need help on how to remove the driver and passenger front fenders. I have all the tools just looking for the best way to do it

just follow the bolts around the fender and remove them. There are hard to reach bolts on the front of the fender behind the grill and the valance. If not removing front grill, then still might have to take the headlights out to reach the bolts.

Thank you. I am removing the grill as I am redoing almost the whole truck including the grill. It is a chevrolet and I drive a gmc.

Front Fenders

To remove:

1. Raise and support the hood.
2. Remove the headlamp bezel.
3. Remove the right or left radiator grille molding nuts.
4. Remove the upper and lower molding clip nuts.
5. Remove the radiator grille molding.
6. Remove the lower radiator grille to fender bolts.
7. Remove the cowl vent grille.
8. Remove the hood spring assembly.
9. Remove the radiator support to fender bolts.
10. Remove the wheelhouse panel to shield bolts.
11. Remove the shield to underbody retainers.
12. Remove the shield.
13. Remove the wheelhouse panel to fender bolts.
14. Remove the lower door pillar to fender bolt and shim.
15. Remove the fender to cowl bolt and shim.
16. Open the front door.
17. Remove the upper fender to door pillar bolt and shim.
18. Remove the fender from the vehicle.
Remove the insulator from the fender.




To install:

1. Attach the insulator to the fender.
2. Attach the fender to the vehicle.
3. Loosely attach the upper fender to the door pillar and shim as required.
4. Loosely fasten the cowl bolt and shim as required.
5. Loosely attach the lower door pillar to the fender bolt and shim as required.
6. Reattach the radiator support to fender bolts. Tighten all bolts to 13 ft. lbs.
7. Attach wheelhouse to fender bolts and tighten to 13 ft. lbs.
8. Tighten the lower door pillar to fender bolt to 31 ft. lbs.
9. Attach the shield to the vehicle.
10. Attach the wheelhouse panel to shield bolts.
11. Tighten the fender to cowl bolt and the upper fender to door pillar to 31 ft. lbs.
12. Reattach the hood spring assembly.
13. Install the cowl vent grille.
14. Attach the lower radiator grille to fender bolts.
15. Install the grille molding.
16. Install the upper and lower grille molding clip nuts.
17. Install the upper and lower grille molding nuts.
18. Install the headlamp.
19. Install the headlamp bezel.

Don't forget to about the body shims! When you take the bolts out where the fender meets the cab there may or may not be body shims. You want to keep them together in the same location. It will make it much easier getting the gaps correct when you put the fender back in.

The shims have little handles on them to help setting them in place. As suggested above, count the number at each adjustment point and color code (or otherwise mark) each shim stack for relocating as original.

The three adjustment points:

Point B (shims not shown - accessed through door hinge opening):

You must be registered for see images attach
You must be registered for see images attach



Note: Don't try to use these images to adjust your shim stack thickness (each truck is different and number of shims will vary). Images are provided only to show location and orientation.

The first thing I would do is remove the front bumper!
