I've done it too. I've used hammer handles, long extension bars, phillips screwdriver in the end of a piece of hose, pretty much name it. I only bought one of these cuz it was only $2. It really does work better, maybe cuz you can hear in stereo, but I like that you can get done behind the water pump pulley with the longer thin rod too. It's worth the $2 if you happen to be going that direction. I wouldn't go a long way out of your way and spend $10 in gas just to get one, but if it's on the way to somewhere drop in and pick one up, then you'll swear by it too once you try it.
