Since we don’t know what kind of ‘78 or what kind of tcase, the best answer is IF it has a 32 spline input you MAY be able to adapt it. Nothing from a ‘78 anything will be a direct bolt up.

If you currently have an NP205 behind a manual trans, Advance Adapters sells a kit to put it on a 4L80E. It requires some disassembly and machining the transfer case though.
