I have a alternator that on a 1992 GMC pickup with a 5.7 V8.

Is it possible to put this on my 1987 Chevy R10 with a 4.3 V6?
Its starting to fail and I want to replace and upgrade.

Kill two birds with one stone.

Your '87 has the mounting tabs clocked straight, while the '92 will have them clocked offset. You can use it on your '87 by removing the pulley/fan and then swap the front case halves. Then put the pulley/fan back on.

Hows the best way to remove the pulleys and what can I expect when I do this?
I have never opened an alternator before.

Removing the nut on the pulley can be a real bear without an impact wrench, but usually can be done with a pipe wrench, breaker bar and a hammer. The front case has a bearing in it that the shaft goes through, it is usually a light press fit, so it will take some careful persuasion to remove it. If you let the guts fall out of the rear part of the case, you will have to hold the brushes in place to put it back together.

Just remove the case bolt/screws and rotate the case halves to where you need them and then reinstall the case bolts/screws. No disassembly required!

Then swap pulleys and install.

Rotating the case does nothing here. The mounts are both cast into the same piece... one has the mounts straight across, while the other does not.

Whoa, hold the phone! None of the above info applies and you just need a new alternator. The one on your '87 is not the stock style, unless the 4.3 still got the old case then. Either way, parts don't swap between them.

So there's no way to make the newer style alternator work?

You can use that one if you replace the front case half with the correct style. Or swap all the serpentine belt stuff onto your 4.3.

Would be nice to have only one squealing belt instead of two.
