I bought myself an old 84 v8 that was sinking into this fellas back lawn
Frame was awsome
body is ok
4wd
short box
4 speed
Got the old girl running and realize its a 305 :-/
And going down the road it feels supper low geared
Didnt even use first
305 casting numbers say it come out of a 78ish camaro
Rear end is 373 gears
Now i think i have my heart set on a 350 and mabye a 5 speed for a little higher gearing?
Was looking at a 92 350 with 5 speed but no clue how thats gona line up?
What should i b looking for?
The 92 is propaby throttle boddy so i would have to find carb and intake for it but anything else?

I wouldn't say its useless. Just not going to win any races for sure. Yes, it it better suited for work than play.

Is it not a stock rear end? I have an '84 4 sp. that has low, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. Low gear has no use on the road except maybe towing or in traffic.

L- <5mph
1- 5-25mph
2- 20-35mph
3- 25-85mph

Those are my approximations from what i bass most of my driving from. Around town i primarily use 2nd to navigate the hills of New England, but sometimes 3rd when roads are less hilly.

That's about right. My truck has 3.73 gearing. If it was any lower I would basically have a two speed tranny for regular in town driving. I will say I like his setup when I have a load in it tho.

NV4500 which might just be what you have in that 92. Is the 92 4wd ?

There were a couple of years right around '92 that the 465 was used with a 241 t-case in that body style. The jeep guys usually snap those up pretty quick.

Missed that it was a 5 speed. Not sure if the nv4500 was in the 1500 series trucks or just the 2500 and heavier. The only other 5 speed they had in that era, I think, was the nv3550.

Tks guys
Georgeb- tks for the link it actually gimme a much better idea what I have and what I'm looking for
Was comparing my sm465 (top gear 1.00) to a nv4500 (top gear .73)
Just realized if i increase my tire size to 35s than my truck will do 65 mph at 2300rpms
And it dose 65mph at 2700rpms on 31 inch tires
Want to keep my Rpms low if i do 60-65
