I'm confused. Did it shift and rev ok with the original trans or has this started since the second trans was installed?

Perfectly fine with original trans. Sadly it’s sitting under the shop with a cracked housing.

Then it almost has to be something with the new tranny. You swap torque converters from original to new or no?

I didn’t swap converters. Was nervous about there being trash in it from when the trans housing cracked.

Your gears are perfect for overdrive and 35s.
There is nothing wrong with 2700 rpm at 70 mph. Even with 500 hp you need that rpm range of you want to boot it and feel it pull hard.

Maybe you should consider a 4l80...? It will also give you a few more mph as I believe 4th ratio is 1.70 vs 700r4 with 1.75.
And you'll never break it. Stand alone controllers have dropped in price so I hear.

Close the 700r4 has the .70 od and the 4l80 is .75

Let me rack your mind on this then. What would keep it from wanting to rev over 4K at WOT 4-2? In neutral, the motor revs great and so forth in 1st or 2nd. But when you want to “pass” someone it doesn’t want to rev more than 4K.

with smaller tire cars and 410s the first gear of the 700 is basically for burnouts, not so much with 35s. There is a governor in the 700 that makes the transmission shift whenever it hits a certain rpm/centrifugal (IIRC) that over powers the springs and allows the trans to shift, putting in different springs will raise or lower the rpm for shift. It is located on the ps of the trans, is round and held in by s snap ring.

I bought it used and it had this written on the side of the bellhousing. “4x4-Kevlar Clutches-Shift Kit-Fresh Rebuild-B&M Pan”.
I even swapped the old governor from my busted trans that was previously built and it didn’t really change much.

Nope. Did some further digging and this torque converter is does not lock up. The plug going to the tranny doesn’t have power anyways.

lack of lock up isnt going to prevent you from having the power in 2d you are missing. Lock up is generally only used in 3rd or 4th to increase mileage. You need to get a tach in the truck so you can see what rpms it turning.

Beautiful truck! I'd be interested in knowing the compression ratio, camshaft specs, and cylinder head specs. 500hp from a non-LS small block with only 350 cubes is quite a feat, and I suspect its powerband would be 3500-6500 RPM, if not higher. So if it's happy at 2700 RPM, the horsepower is probably a lot less.

I do have a tach. Running 65 it’s at 2500.

Have you checked that your throttle linkage is bound up, and you're getting full throttle?
