On my 85 Jimmy when I have it in 4wd, I have to keep my hand on the shifter to keep it engaged. My friend has an 87 that does the same thing. I took the transmission out and the shift lever has no adjustments on it. Any ideas?

Make sure it's not the Tcase mount being broke. That can happen when if the Tcase moves under the truck since the linkage is part of the body, then the Tcase moves and pulls on the linkage. If it's not that, then it may need the shift fork or fork pads replaced.
