So,

When I bought my truck it seemed like the motor in there was a little wimpy in it, but figured with the 39.5" Super Swampers were just a little much on it.

The VIN on the truck listed the stock engine as a 400ci.

I finally got around to cleaning the crud off the block and pulled the engine VIN and sure enough it's a 350ci engine. V0211CMJ. Shows it was built in Flint on 11 Feb and its a 1974 engine with a T400 Police transmission, but who knows if that trans is still mated up.

I have been having some issues the truck running on the rebuilt Holley 600cfm I put on a month ago, so i took it off and put the quadra-jet back on. Now, I got it back running at idle, but there is no power when driving. It is blowing a little more white smoke than it was before, so might have messed the engine or head gasket or heads up. No milky oil, so not 100% sure what it is.

I am thinking of buying a 400ci block and starting a slight build on it. There are a couple used blocks posted up for sale for $200 or so. Not sure if that is a good price, never bought engines alone. I know I would need to have them bored out and honed, some pistons, rings, etc. Not sure what heads or other things I would need.

Should I start the 400ci build to bring it back to the engine it started life with or just do another 350ci which are a dime a dozen around here. I know they are the same block in essence, any help or insight would be appreciated.

You'll spend a fortune on a SBC 400 compared to a 350. I'd go 350 myself, for the common parts, cheaper parts, easier to acquire and put some adders in it to bring up the power a bit, like an RV cam, Eddy dual plane intake etc. Then you also get to avoid the siameesed cylinders that have been known to overheat.

Not sure what is in there. Will have to find out.

I am going to start dis-assembly soon on the truck, going to have 2 months of paid vacation to take as I am transitioning out of the Army, so should have some time on my hand to work on it all.

gears are the biggest thing, if you had a stock, bone stock 305 or 350 and the right gears it'd make a world of difference.

Yeah, we plan on staying here. I will probably be going over to Afghanistan as a contractor for a year or two, but then back here.

Edit - Mike, just looked up your profile and seen your True C/K rigs facebook page and seen the your truck there so seen it was you. Its Trueblood man, how you been? Small world, haha.
