3.08 gears with 35" tires?

you have to run the rpo codes and even then somebody could have changed the rear ends or gears, pull the covers and check only for sure way.

Well, that's another thing. I can't get my transmission to shift into overdrive, even if I manually shift it. Therefore it's like I already have a 3 speed transmission. What gear ratio would a 1990 1/2 Suburban have? I found a nice 4x4 that I could buy as a donor truck and use the axles off of it.

Have you actually got under the truck and verified its a 700r4 and not a Th350? Just cuz you have the OD on the shift indicator doesn't mean someone hasn't converted to Th350 in the past. 90 Suburban can have the same gear ratios as your truck, 2.73, 3.08, 3.73 etc. I think 3.42 was even an option in 90.

no need to get under the truck. Just turn the key on and count the clicks of the shifter. If it clicks 5 times its a 3 spd, if it clicks 6 times its a 700r4.

It clicks 6 times. The '90 suburban that I found is bone stock with 3.73 gears, 350ci tbi and a 700R4 transmission. It's in really nice condition. I might even put the '90 grill on it. I can get the suburban for about $1,200. has anyone ever done a tbi swap?

Right now I have a carburated 305, so a 350 tbi would be nice. A spare 700R4 would come in handy. I could always use the front leather seats out of the suburban. I will alao be using both the front and rear axles, and I could do the front grill swap even though I just bought a billet grill within 2 weeks for the '87 front clip. I'm not too sure if they're the same or not. I can get ALOT of parts off the truck and still turn around and make money selling parts or something.

I can't do that, me and my Dad already invested too much time in the '85 K10. My Dad talked with some guys that he works with and one of them happens to have a junked 1980 Chevy K10 which has 4.10 gears front and rear. It has no motor or transmission and is pretty much a parts truck but he wants $600 for it. I think my gear ratio problem is solved!

But they're way better then 3.08s I have now :signs8:

I just want a nice daily driver.. And considering my overdrive doesn't work, I figure the 4.10s would be good with 35s. All I would like now is a fuel injected motor. I have the cash to help with the swap, just don't think I have the knowledge to wire everything up correctly.

Hey, there you go, Get that 80 model and run with those parts from it. There are some cool things that are 80 ONLY features. All 80 4x4's had NP205. No matter 1/2 ton, 3/4, 1 ton, and no matter Manual or Auto, all 80's had NP205 Tcase. Also 80's had OEM Spicer lock out hubs on the front differential. And if it's 4.10's, you're set up good, and with 12 bolt rear end instead of 10 bolt. The 12 bolt is a tad stronger. Of course that's an argumentative statement, but I've heard of many 10 bolts going belly up, and rarely hear of a 12 bolt going junk. GET IT !!!

What the 12 bolt gains in t ring and pinion strength, and a beefier carrier, It loses in smaller pinion bearings.

True, but I've seen a few 10 bolts with pinion bearings go bad, but haven't seen a 12 bolt that has done it. I'm sure it happens, just seem much more common that a 10 bolt fails. Maybe cuz they are more common these days. They serve their purpose well, but you start adding shift kits, big tires, or performance motors they struggle to hold up.

Everything can break. I broke a 14 bolt semi floater with will under 400hp and 285 75 16s...

if your overdrive isn't working, your trans is broke. If you're planing on making it a daily driver, a broken trans is not a good part of that equation.
