I understand this to be a 'lock plate'. It was practically glued to the inside of the transfer case. Looks like a serious silicone/sealer/adhesive was used. Even after 35 yrs, its a PITA to get off.

My question is, what was the purpose of the sealant? Can the case leak here? To keep it in place? I'm going to soak it in carb cleaner to get the old sealer off.....then another question is, what do I replace it with? This stuff is far more midevil than Permatex.

Permatex makes a gray gasket maker-sealer just for diffs and gear boxes, "Because gear oil has friction modifiers that break down normal RTV and cause leaking, this specialty silicone has been tested to OEM specifications to ensure complete sealing."

So am going to just use that.
