I need to know if my 1980 gmc k1500 should have a brace from the 205 transfer case and what should the crossmember look like. Thanks

The crossmember would be straight with the ends turned up about 3” to bolt to the frame.

If it has an auto trans it would have had a support bar from the side of the tcase to a bellhousing bolt.

Appreciate the info, guess I need to find a brace. My crossmember is straight across without the ends turned up.

The correct crossmember for a pre '85 1/2 and 3/4 ton looks like the one with the ends curved up. The crossmember that's closest in the pic and basically flat is for a pre '85 1 ton because the from is deeper in that area. The 1 ton crossmember won't work on a 1/2 or 3/4 ton without fab work.

I'm probably going to complicate things here, but it just so happens I recently had my crossmember out from my 1980 GMC K15. It's different than what @nvrenuf illustrates. I guess I can't guarantee the frame/crossmember is 1980 (even though the cab is 1980), but it is 1/2 ton. Here are some pictures. Note that the oval mounting hole for the adapter is on the driver's side.

You might want to see my post "Adapter between SM465 and NP205" which covers the crossmember/adapter install.
