All:

Saving money isn't my main objective here, since it's so cheap to run anyway. I just figured that as much as it smokes on startup, that I maybe should run a little leaner.
With a 2 stroke, when it doesn't smoke is when you need to be concerned.

As in no oil, of course. But smoke or none on a cold start is not necessarily an indicator of mix ratio.
Some 2s never smoke and others you gotta run half way to the next town before you get all the smoke out.

I run around 42-45 to 1 in the fleet. I use the synthetic Stihl oil with 90 octane rec (boat gas). No problems with fuel going bad.

Yeah, I was talking about no oil, especially on oil injected 2 strokes, or premix that you're not sure about.
In the 70s I had oil injected Enduro bikes, and I would look behind occasionally just to make sure. Never had one fail though.

I will say though, that all 2 strokes smoke. Sometimes its just hard to see.

Yeah those old bikes were sweet. Me and my friend each had early 70s Suzuki TS 250 enduros we trail road everywhere and got into a little trouble lol.
Sometimes the oil injection got plugged and the engine would just seize while riding. Allot of guys did away with the injection and premixed there fuel.

I've had lots of 2 stroke machines, still have some, some premix, some injected. I disabled the injection and ran premix in 90% of them. If they had smoke they were good and never put 2% of the effort we've put into finding the ideal mix for a Honda Hobbit.
