1988 Suburban CRUISE CONTROL HELP!

I forgot to move those factory trailer harness wires out of the way to see what that rectangular plug went to. But I believe it's an adapter harness that plugs into the cruise servo.

That's an '88, 4x4 Suburban with original small block.

I found everything at a JY today. Those membranes on the vacuum servo are super thin. Is that just for dust protection, or is that the actual vacuum seal? I’m a bit concerned with how thin it is and 40 years old since they were asking quite a bit…

I believe it's the actual vacuum seal? Not entirely sure, honestly.

Correct me if I’m wrong, as I know next to nothing about TBI’s, but my vehicle should already have a VSS correct? If so, one of these should be fairly straightforward:

Yes, on the back of the gauge cluster. But the pulse per mile it uses may be something completely different than that unit will work with?

Also, it amazes me how much most people REALLY like cruise control. So many people can't stand it when cruise doesn't work. I know I'm definitely in the minority, but I really don't care that much, lol. I rarely ever use the cruise control on anything I own or drive... most times I use it is just to see if it still works, and that's it. Ain't no way I'd spend that kind of money on aftermarket cruise, lol. But again, I know I'm in the minority.

I'm one of those guys that can't keep a steady speed, so I use the cruise in my dailys when I'm on the open road. I subscribe to the "Left foot up, Right foot down" notion and that's what I taught both G-sons!!!! Kooper bought in IMMEDIATELY

I really like cruise on long stretches as well. I have to admit, I especially like traffic aware cruise control when I’m in stop and go traffic on the freeway.

I have used the Rostra aftermarket cruise on non cruise equipped trucks. As long as the truck has a VSS, it will work. The speed signal wire will plug into the same connector cavity as a factory cruise setup. You then need to set the programming switches on the Rostra box to be able to interpret the GM VSS signal.

If you can find the terminals and connector body, you can use the factory GM cruise control switch on the turn signal.

Wow! They have gone way up in price.

As common as these trucks are, I’d think you could price together a cruise system fairly cheaply. Depends on how patient you are.

This is somewhat helpful - it confirms my suspicion that the larger-diameter vacuum hose going over the main junction box on the cowl is part of the vacuum-break system that cut the cruise control when you pressed the brake.

Also at least have an idea as to what the engine compartment side vacuum diaphram actuator looks like. Still can't quite tell what else I might be missing.

I bought some British parts from a man a couple hundred miles away who also had quite a few squarebodys (he even had my elusive window switches that work perfectly). i may give him a call next week or so and see if he had any of these pieces laying around.
