I have the chance to pick up a 1980 205 t-case for $250
what all will i need to make this swap? My engine and tranny is out of truck so i' like to put in a 205 if its a smooth install. What all do i need to make this happen? Will my drive shafts work? I' m reading something about a change in something with the th400 after 86

The pattern changed to round instead of racetrack in 86. This shouldn't apply to you since you're going to be using the racetrack pattern anyway. For some reason, I think $250 is a bit much even for a NP205. If it's a fresh build it's not, but for a used unit I think it is. If it was a round pattern it might be only because those are more rare, but I woudn't pay $250 for a racetrack NP205. NP208's can be had for $50, 75 and $100. I've seen NP205's here for $150 and sometimes up to $200.
But will it work, going on what trans? Assuming a 700r4? It'll need to be a 27 spline Th350 adapter, and you'll need a spacer for it to work on the 700r4 so this means you will need some driveshaft work to make it happen. If it's going on a Th400, you'll need the 32 spline unit and need to make sure if it's the short or the long female input shaft, becuase there was 2 differnt Th400 4x4 output shafts.
So pretty much, we'd need more info as to what it's going in and what trans being connected to.

Ok yeah. My tranny is a 1987 TH400 with a 208 t-case. It was just removed from my 3/4 ton 4x4 that had a 6.2. I will be installing a 454 along with the TH400 and was thinking about replacing the 208 with this 1980 205 t-case. I'm prety sure I should be able to get the adapter plate that bolts to the TH400 it came off of. The seller is telling me it was in a 1980 Suburban with 91,000 original miles. Kinda hard to beleave that but that's what he is saying.

What is the diference in the racetrack pattern and the round pattern? What years were what?

OK, so it's coming off a Th400. That's the good part. Now you need to find out if it's coming off a short 4x4 output shaft or a long 4x4 output shaft. IF it's wrong you'll have to change the input in the Tcase which isn't hard to do, but it costs about $150 to buy the part.
Post #3 here will explain some of the differences.

So If I'm reading this right I need the same size input shaft on the 205 as what is on my 208?? What about the cross member and the 208 adapter ? will the 205 bolt into the 208 adapter ?? and I will defienetlly have to change the drive shafts, correct?

It's gonna be very close on the driveshafts. You might not have to if you're using a slip yoke version on tail end of the NP205. Yes, you are likely to need a different crossmember, but maybe not. I'm not familiar with the type of crossmember on a Burb with a Th400. If I had to guess, I'd say the NP208 input shaft would be equal to the NP205 Short Th400 Input shaft. But, we're going to use you to confirm that for us. BTW, I can sure put your NP208 to use with my A833 until I find my a round pattern NP205, then have to swap inputs.

Here is a pic of Round Pattern NP205 with Long input shaft which is the only way it comes OEM. The Racetrack pattern comes in both long or short.

Here is a pic of what I'm thinking you probably need. This is Racetrack Pattern Adapter bolt pattern, and the short female input. The above pic is Round Pattern with Long, this one is Racetrack short. You should be able to understand the difference with these 2 pics. Hope it helps.

I can assure you it's racetrack pattern. Round didn't start til 86. What's going to matter is if you need the short or the long 32 spline female input shaft. I been doing some heavy duty research on these the last few days. I need a Round Pattern NP205 and gonna have to swap the inputs since they round only comes in long in OEM form.
