1983 K5 fuel sending unit

On my 1983 K5, I am wondering about the ground wire connection at the sending unit. This is a mechanical fuel pump/25 gallon setup. Rather than disconnect the ground wire from the frame, I removed the wire at the sending unit. It seemed the wire had a female style spade connector. It was covered in dirt and when I wiggled it off the spade, the crimped parts of the connector broke off with the spade.

I was planning on reusing the sending unit as the gauge worked fine. Now 2 months later I am going to reinstall the tank after painting underneath, but am wondering how this should connect? It seems the spade must have been welded onto the sending unit? This was a picture when I removed it. The wire was connected to the blade in the 9 oclock area.. The way it is currently is to large to accept a typical female spade connector, so I am guessing it must have broke off the bottom side?

Not sure if you've measured it, but it could be a 3/8" (9.5mm) spade connector, which is slightly oversized compared to the more common 1/4" (6.3mm) spades.

The part of the female connector on the wire that is still intact looks like the typical 1/4" size. It almost seems like there was a small tab welded on the end that broke off, but I didnt notice when I took it out.

You are correct it was welded. I'd take the wire loose at the frame clean and strip it drill a hole in the tab insert wire and solder. You can also crimp a small eyelet connector to the existing wire, drill a pilot hole in the tab and use a mechanical connection.( screw, small bolt and nut)
